Written by Administrator
Monday, 26 May 2008
First ordination of a presbyter for the archbishop who’s been leading the diocese of Moscow since last autumn: Italian Msgr. Paolo Pezzi. On Saturday 24th May, in Saint Petersburg, in the Catholic Church of Assumption, Msgr. Pezzi is ordaining Deacon Nikolaj Vojtechoviè, 31 years old, with Byelorussian origins. Baptized in his home town, Ivje, in 1989, and confirmed in Czêstochowa ten years later, the future priest attended the seminar «Mary Queen of the Apostles» in Saint Petersburg. In 2007, for his bachelor’s degree, he submitted a dissertation on the Eucharist as origin of mercy in the spirituality of Saint Faustina Kowalska. The seminar of Saint Petersburg is the only Catholic seminar all over Russia. It was opened on 29th June 1993 in Moscow and later on moved to San Petersburg, to the building of the Catholic seminar (depending on the metropolitan see of Mogilev) closed by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Today, it is attended by 19 aspiring priests and 12 friars. In Russia, from 1996 to present days, 28 seminarians were ordained priests. The current rector is Msgr. Paolo Pezzi himself. On 29th June, in Tomsk (South Western Siberia), another seminarian is going to be ordained: Deacon Vasilij Zazdravnych.

IMPORTANT FOR RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO CHURCHES PDF Print E-mail

An "important" visit, especially for the "relations between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church". That's how mgr. Paolo Pezzi, archbishop of Moscow, looks at the trip that card. Walter Kasper, President of the Papal Council for the promotion of the unity of Christians, will take in the Russian Federation from 21 to 30 May. "The cardinal - highlights to SIR mgr. Pezzi - will have a number of meetings, with the Patriarch Alexius II and with the metropolitan bishop Kirill, whom he will meet in Smolensk. In addition, he will visit some Orthodox and Catholic places; in particular, I think I should mention his visit to Kazan, where he will go on a pilgrimage to the icon of the Virgin of Kazan, which he brought back himself to Russia and to the Orthodox Church a few years ago. "As to the strict meaning of this trip, that is, as far as the Catholic Church is concerned - added the archbishop -, card. Kasper's presence in Moscow is certainly, for us, suggestive of the love and kindness of the Pope who sent here such an important assistant of his. We are waiting for him tomorrow evening, on the occasion of the Feast of Corpus Domini that he will celebrate with us and with the Catholic community of Moscow".
