Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite

dionigi.jpgDear brothers and sisters:

In the course of the catechesis on the Fathers of the Church, I would like to speak today about a very mysterious figure: a theologian from the sixth century, whose name is not known, and who wrote under the pseudonym of Dionysius the Areopagite. With this pseudonym, he alluded to the passage of Scripture that we just heard, that is, the case narrated by St. Luke in the 17th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, where he tells how Paul preached in Athens, in the Areopagus, addressing an elite group of the Greek intellectual world. In the end, the greatest part of those who heard him were not interested and they left making fun of him. Nevertheless, some, just a few, according to what St. Luke tells us, approached Paul and opened themselves to faith. The evangelist gives us two names: Dionysius, member of the Areopagus, and a woman named Damaris.

ECUMENICAL CELEBRATION WITH PATRIARCH KAREKIM II
On May 9th the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, His Holiness Karekin II who was visiting Rome with a delegation of eighteen bishops and archbishops, came to the Papal Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls to preside at an ecumenical celebration together with Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity. The two men led prayers at the tomb of the Apostle for the fruitful development of relations between the two Churches which began during the pontificate of John Paul II and have continued under Benedict XVI who met with the delegation earlier in the morning at the Vatican. The celebration took place in the apse of the basilica dominated by the great mosaic of Christ beneath which the monks of the Benedictine Abbey processed with their abbot Fr Edmund Power, followed by the Armenian bishops and their Patriarch between Cardinal Kasper and Cardinal Andrea di Montezemolo, Archpriest of the Basilica who welcomed the visiting delegation. He greeted them on their visit to the tomb of St Paul in preparation for the celebrations marking the two thousandth anniversary of his birth and in particular he recalled the aim of those celebrations, to make better known the teachings of the Apostle, to advance the ecumenical dialogue and to pray for the unity of Christians. The Abbot introduced Vespers which were sung in Latin and Armenian with readings and prayers in Italian and English. The Patriarch then reflected in Armenian on the feast of Pentecost, invoking the Holy Spirit to further the path of Christian unity and this desire was reaffirmed by Cardinal Kasper in his message of thanks given in English. The celebration concluded with a blessing given by the Patriarch and the Cardinal to the large crowd of Armenian faithful and pilgrims present in the basilica.

san-paolo-masaccio-pisa.jpg Benedict XVI is offering those who visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls a chance to get a plenary indulgence during the Pauline Jubilee Year.

The indulgence was announced in a decree made public Saturday and signed by Cardinal James Stafford and Bishop Gianfranco Girotti, respectively penitentiary major and regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary.

The faithful can receive the indulgence during the Pauline year, marking the 2,000th anniversary of the Apostle's birth. The Pauline year runs from June 28, 2008, to June 29, 2009.

With the customary conditions, the faithful can obtain the indulgence by undertaking "a pious visit in the form of a pilgrimage to the papal basilica of St. Paul on Rome's Via Ostiense and [praying] in accordance with the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff," the decree explained.

Holy Father

On Cyril and Methodius
santi-cirillo-metodio.jpgDear brothers and sisters:

Today, I would like to speak about Sts. Cyril and Methodius, brothers of the same parents and in the faith, known as the apostles to the Slavic people. Cyril was born in Thessalonica, son of the imperial magistrate Leon, in 826-827. He was the youngest of seven children. As a child, he learned the Slavic language. At age 14, he was sent to Constantinople to be educated and was accompanied by the young emperor, Michael III. During those years, he was introduced into the various university disciplines, among others, dialectics, and had Photius as his teacher. After having rejected a brilliant matrimony, he decided to receive holy orders and became the librarian in the patriarchate. Shortly afterward, wanting to retreat from society, he hid himself in a monastery, but soon was discovered and entrusted with teaching sacred and profane sciences, a task that he fulfilled so well that he won the title of "philosopher."
