Pope: Bishops in Former USSR Face Difficulties
benedettoxvi-12.jpg Bishops in the former Soviet Union countries of the southern Caucasus region still face many difficult situations, though the "flame of the Gospel" still persists, Benedict XVI says.

The Pope affirmed this today when he received in audience prelates from the region, which includes all of Armenia and the majority of Georgia and Azerbaijan. The bishops are in Rome for their five-yearly visit.

"Since the fall of the Soviet Union," the Holy Father said, "your peoples have seen significant social changes along the road to progress. Yet difficult situations persist: many are the poor, the unemployed, and the refugees whom war has forced from their homes."

Nonetheless, he noted, "the flame of the Gospel" has not been extinguished in the Caucasus, "despite there having been no lack of violent confrontations, both internal and from outside, which have caused many victims, among whom the Church includes many martyrs of the faith."

Message to Russians Reveals Warmhearted Pope
Benedict XVI's video message to the people of Russia gave viewers a look at the "warmhearted" Pope of "great dignity," affirmed the Russia specialist for Aid to the Church in Need.

Peter Humeniuk gave this analysis of the response to a documentary that aired in Russia on the state channel Vesti on April 16, the Holy Father's 81st birthday. The documentary included a personal message from the Pope to all Russians.

Humeniuk said the film brought the Holy Father closer to many of the Russian people. Viewers saw the Pope as "a person of great dignity and at the same time kind, and [having a] warmhearted personality," he said.

Many people found it especially beautiful that the Holy Father gave part of his message in Russian, Humeniuk added.

Father Joaquín Alliende, the international ecclesiastical assistant and president-elect of the Germany-based aid organization, expressed his delight at the warm reception, both among the Russian public and in the international press.

European Committee Meets to Plan Future Encounters
European Christians and Muslims are intensifying dialogue and planning future encounters focused on building bridges between the two faiths.

The Committee for Relations With Muslims in Europe, established by the Conference of European Churches and the Council of European Bishops' Conferences, met in Hungary from April 17 to 20. A number of Muslim guests participated in the meeting and the group jointly worked on preparations for a Christian-Muslim conference scheduled for October.

Today, I would like to speak about Sts. Cyril and Methodius, brothers of the same parents and in the faith, known as the apostles to the Slavic people. Cyril was born in Thessalonica, son of the imperial magistrate Leon, in 826-827. He was the youngest of seven children. As a child, he learned the Slavic language. At age 14, he was sent to Constantinople to be educated and was accompanied by the young emperor, Michael III. During those years, he was introduced into the various university disciplines, among others, dialectics, and had Photius as his teacher. After having rejected a brilliant matrimony, he decided to receive holy orders and became the librarian in the patriarchate. Shortly afterward, wanting to retreat from society, he hid himself in a monastery, but soon was discovered and entrusted with teaching sacred and profane sciences, a task that he fulfilled so well that he won the title of "philosopher."

The Pontifical Oriental Institute (POI - or PIO in Italian version - Pontificio Istituto Oientale) is an educational facility under the jurisdiction of the Holy See dedicated to advanced studies on Eastern Christianity. This Pontifical Institute of  the Oriental Church has  a special Catholic mission. Its Catholic mission aims at diffusing knowledge and appreciation for the religious and cultural traditions of the Eastern Christian churches. Its Eastern orientation is recognized by the two faculties of specialization offered: the Faculty of Eastern Church Studies and the Faculty of Eastern Canon Law. The Oriental Institute is also dedicated to the progression in ecumenical dialogue between the churches and holds a student body composed from among all creeds.
