TURKEY: DELEGATION OF GERMAN BISHOPS MAKING A PILGRIMAGE TO TARSUS
A delegation of 10 German bishops led by Card. Joachim Meisner left for a five-day pilgrimage to Istanbul and Tarsus yesterday. The auxiliary bishop of Hamburg, Msgr. Hans-Jochen Jaschke, participates in the journey, too. Msgr. Hans-Jochen Jaschke is active in relation to dialogue with the Turkish Islamic Union in Germany (DITIB). “This is not a journey to get information about the situation of the Christians, it is a pilgrimage”, pointed out Meisner, stating that during the visit, “of course, one realizes how Christians live in Turkey”. “One does not want to provoke in any way”, added Msgr. Robert Zollitsch, president of German bishops. “It must be possible for the Christians to make a pilgrimage and to celebrate the Mass at the church of Tarsus, set up as museum”. “We shall be discreet”, stated Msgr. Jaschke, “but we shall clearly say that we are Catholic bishops visiting our Paul, to one of his historical places, and that we would like to make a pilgrimage to Turkey, which would willingly approach Europe”. “A centre for pilgrims in Tarsus might ease tensions on the construction of mosques in Germany, too”, affirmed Jaschke. However, he pointed out that it is necessary to be careful about a mutual attitude: “Intelligence is needed on the political side as well as in relation to Christians and Muslims - he added, – freedom of religion is not a threat for one’s country but an opportunity”.

BARTHOLOMEW I AT EU
patriarca-bartolomeo-i.jpg "Europe must include Turkey in its integration plan"; at the same time, "Turkey must promote dialogue and tolerance in the country" and the protection of the fundamental rights, "such as religious freedoms". Bartholomew I, the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, who spoke today at the European Parliament in Brussels, said he is in favour of Ankara's "full accession" to the EU. In his speech, broken by the applauses of the MEPs at the passage about the relations between Turkey and the EU, Bartholomew spoke of the "need of dialogue between different faiths and cultures to build a world of peace"; he said he is "against any form of war and any form of violence and intolerance"; he lingered on environmental issues, describing the initiatives the Orthodox Church is taking on this front. "Turkey is a bridge-country between Europe and Asia, between the East and the West, between Christianity ad Islam - Bartholomew explained to SIR -. It is a lay state that, however, sometimes fails to fulfil this trait. In addition, there's still a wide range of problems to be solved to achieve a full democracy, the respect of human rights and minorities".

Christians and Muslims: Together for the dignity of the family
Vatican Marks End of Ramadan with Message for Muslims.
As the fundamental cell of society, the family is equally respected in the Christian world as it is in the Muslim world, cardinal Tauran says. It is where one learns to respect others and be mindful of their identity; it therefore cannot but benefit inter-religious dialogue.

Dear Muslim friends,

1. As the end of the month of Ramadan approaches, and following a now well-established tradition, I am pleased to send you the best wishes of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. During this month Christians close to you have shared your reflections and your family celebrations; dialogue and friendship have been strengthened. Praise be to God!

2. As in the past, this friendly rendez-vous also gives us an opportunity to reflect together on a mutually topical subject which will enrich our exchange and help us to get to know each other better, in our shared values as well as in our differences. This year we would like to propose the subject of the family.

3. One of the documents of the Second Council Vatican, Gaudium et Spes, which deals with the Church in the modern world, states: ‘The well-being of the individual person and of human and Christian society is intimately linked with the healthy condition of that community produced by marriage and family. Hence Christians and all men who hold this community in high esteem sincerely rejoice in the various ways by which men today find help in fostering this community of love and perfecting its life, and by which parents are assisted in their lofty calling. Those who rejoice in such aids look for additional benefits from them and labour to bring them about.

Holy Father

On Cyril and Methodius
santi-cirillo-metodio.jpgDear brothers and sisters:

Today, I would like to speak about Sts. Cyril and Methodius, brothers of the same parents and in the faith, known as the apostles to the Slavic people. Cyril was born in Thessalonica, son of the imperial magistrate Leon, in 826-827. He was the youngest of seven children. As a child, he learned the Slavic language. At age 14, he was sent to Constantinople to be educated and was accompanied by the young emperor, Michael III. During those years, he was introduced into the various university disciplines, among others, dialectics, and had Photius as his teacher. After having rejected a brilliant matrimony, he decided to receive holy orders and became the librarian in the patriarchate. Shortly afterward, wanting to retreat from society, he hid himself in a monastery, but soon was discovered and entrusted with teaching sacred and profane sciences, a task that he fulfilled so well that he won the title of "philosopher."
